The short answer
Pick the dock first and the boat second. That is the opposite of how the decision usually gets made, and the dock is the only variable with real minutes attached. A cruise lasts an hour. Walking to the far dock and back, from six of the eight areas we measured, takes longer than that.
- From the Museum Quarter the nearest dock is 5.9 minutes away and the furthest 38.8. Same city, same hour on the water, 32.9 minutes of difference each way.
- Booking direct is cheaper, but only just. 15,50 EUR on an operator's own site against 16,49 EUR for the cheapest widely sold boat on a platform. 0,99 euros.
- The most reviewed boat is also nearly the cheapest: 33,484 reviews at 16,49 EUR. Paying more buys drinks and minutes, not a better route.
- Nothing sells out. Boats run all day and we found no sold-out sailings, which makes this the opposite of the Anne Frank House. Book ahead for the discount, not for the seat.
The dock decides more than the boat
In our guide to what to see we wrote that dozens of boats run the same loop at similar prices. The prices part holds. The rest of that sentence turned out to be the wrong thing to focus on, because the operators do not share a dock. LOVERS uses four, Blue Boat exactly one, Flagship several more. So we measured the walk from the eight neighbourhood points this site already uses, to all six.
The first four columns are all LOVERS, which is why that operator is the default answer for most of the city. The fifth is Blue Boat's only dock and the sixth is Flagship's at the Sea Palace.
Minutes on foot from each area to each departure dock
| From | Centraal | Anne Frank | Leidseplein | Rijksmuseum | Blue Boat | Flagship |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jordaan | 16.5 | 3.9 | 18.5 | 24.3 | 21.9 | 24.8 |
| Canal Ring | 15.8 | 5.4 | 13.3 | 19.1 | 16.7 | 22.9 |
| De Pijp | 41.9 | 38.4 | 23.8 | 20.1 | 19 | 43.2 |
| Oud-West | 34.3 | 21.9 | 13.2 | 15.6 | 15.4 | 41.3 |

Walking times: OpenRouteService on OpenStreetMap, foot-walking profile, one matrix call on 24 September 2026, from the same eight neighbourhood points used in our guide to where to stay. Dock locations are the addresses each operator publishes, geocoded by Dutch postcode rather than street number after the first attempt put three of them in the wrong place. Every dock was checked against a control point before the table was built; the six are between 6 and 290 metres from theirs.
In 6 of the 8 areas, walking to the furthest dock and back takes longer than the cruise itself. From Oost it is 90.8 minutes on foot to spend 60 on the water. The boat is an hour wherever you board it, so every one of those minutes is a choice you made at the booking page without being told.
The pattern is simple once you see it. If you are in the Jordaan or the Canal Ring, the Anne Frank dock is the answer and it is not close: 3.9 minutes from the Jordaan against 24.8 to the Sea Palace. If you are in the Museum Quarter or De Pijp, the southern docks by the Rijksmuseum win by half an hour. From Noord, take the ferry and board at Centraal, 11.5 minutes, rather than crossing the city to the Rijksmuseum at 42.2.
Only Oost has no good answer. Its nearest dock is 33.2 minutes away and its furthest 45.4, so from there a canal cruise is a trip into town whichever boat you pick, and the sensible move is to pair it with something else in the centre rather than go out and back for it.
What it costs, direct and on a platform
We looked at the three biggest operators and at the boats the platforms actually sell. The headline is that the gap between booking direct and booking on a platform is about a euro, which is a different finding from the museums, where it ran to fourteen.
The standard one hour cruise, from each operator's own site
| Operator | Own price | Length | Audio languages | Docks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LOVERS | 15,50 EUR | 60 min | 19 | 4 |
| Flagship | 19,40 EUR | 60 min | Not stated | 6 |
| Blue Boat | Not shown on the site | 75 min | 5 | 1 |

LOVERS is both the cheapest and the most flexible: 15,50 EUR, nineteen audio languages and four docks, and it publishes that 298,054 people have booked that one product. Blue Boat is the interesting outlier. Its cruise runs 75 minutes rather than 60, a quarter longer than everyone else, but it leaves from a single dock out by the Rijksmuseum, so that extra quarter of an hour is easily swallowed by the walk unless you are already in the south of the city.
What actually differs between one boat and another
Five things, and the route is not one of them. They all run the canal belt because that is where the canals are.
The five variables worth checking before you book
| What | How much it varies |
|---|---|
| Where it leaves from | Six docks between the three big operators, up to 33 minutes apart on foot |
| How long it runs | 60 minutes as standard, 75 at Blue Boat and on the Anne Frank departure, 90 on Captain Jack |
| Guide | A recording in 19 languages at LOVERS, 5 at Blue Boat, a live guide on the evening boats |
| Open or closed | Saloon boats are glazed and heated; open boats are not, which decides the month |
| Drinks | Included, optional or absent, and it is most of the price gap between 16,49 and 39,95 |

The open boat against the saloon boat is the choice that the month should make for you. The open boats rate highest of everything here, 4.92 out of 5, and almost all of that is summer. A glazed, heated saloon boat in a Dutch February is a different product from the same trip in July, and we worked through what each month is actually like in the guide to when to go.
The boats, ordered by how many people have reviewed them
Review count is the only thing about a canal boat you can verify from a different country, so it is what we sort by rather than by which kiosk on the Damrak shouts loudest. Prices and counts are from the same morning.

Check availabilityTwo of those deserve singling out for opposite reasons. The classic saloon boat has 33,484 reviews at 16,49 EUR, which makes it the default in the most literal sense: more people have been on it than on anything else in this city and it is nearly the cheapest thing here. And Captain Jack rates 4.91 on 18,765 reviews, the best combination of score and volume on the list, at 2.4 times the price of the classic. The open boat scores higher still at 4.92, but on 5,873 reviews rather than eighteen thousand.
The one time of year the boat is the point
From 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027 the Amsterdam Light Festival puts illuminated installations along the canals, and they are designed to be seen from the water rather than from the bank. It is the one period when the cruise is the attraction instead of the transport. Flagship sells its festival sailing at 27,28 EUR against 16,49 EUR for an ordinary evening boat, so the premium is around eleven euros.
We are not going to tell you whether a given year's installations justify it, because that changes annually and the 2026 edition had not opened when this was written. What we can say is that the dates are from the festival's own calendar and that the docks do not change, so the table above still decides which operator you want.
We have since compared the six festival boats and the official ticket shop properly, and the short version is that buying direct from the festival is both dearer and non-refundable, which is the opposite of the advice on most of this site. Our guide to the Amsterdam Light Festival has the dates, what each way of seeing it costs and which boat.
