Amsterdam on New Year's Eve

For five hours over midnight there is no train, metro, tram or bus, and Centraal shuts completely. Plan the night around that, not around the parties.

The short answer

On New Year's Eve in Amsterdam the public transport network stops for five hours, from 20:00 to 01:00, and Amsterdam Centraal closes entirely: no trains, no metro, no trams, no buses. Ferries to Noord and taxis keep going, night buses start at 01:30, from the IJ side of Centraal, and normal service resumes at 07:00 on 1 January. The official fireworks are electric rather than gunpowder, free, and on Museumplein. Those two facts decide more about your night than any party list.

  1. Stay within walking distance of your midnight. A hotel twenty minutes away by tram is an hour on foot at 00:30, because the tram is not running. This is the single most useful thing on this page.
  2. The Museumplein show is built for 60,000 people and costs nothing. Junior programme from 19:00, live acts from 23:00, countdown from 23:50. A second electric show runs 00:00 to 00:10 at Sloterplas.
  3. The night has a genuine rough edge. The seventh Google result for this search is a news report with 113,700 views on a recent Amsterdam New Year with two deaths, hundreds of arrests and a church burned out. Worth knowing before choosing a crowd.
  4. There is no New Year's Eve canal cruise to book. The platforms return ordinary cruises with 31 December selected, from 16,49 EUR to 25,00 EUR. Dinner sailings over midnight are sold by the boat companies directly.

The five hours with no transport

This is the detail most likely to wreck your evening, and it is easy to miss until you are standing at the station. Amsterdam Centraal does not just stop running trains, it closes, and with it the whole network goes quiet for 5 hours across the exact window in which you would be going to dinner and coming back.

Transport, fireworks locations and timings: iamsterdam.com, the official tourist board, its New Year's Eve page, read on 1 October 2026. That page is stamped 'Last updated on 27 December 2025', so every time below is from the 2025 edition and is published here as the pattern of a normal Amsterdam New Year rather than as the 2026 schedule, which nobody has published yet. Check GVB and NS in December.

Three practical consequences, in the order they will bite. First, where you sleep stops being a matter of taste and becomes a matter of walking distance: if midnight is on Museumplein, a bed in Oud-Zuid or the Museum Quarter is a different trip from a bed in Noord. Our guide to where to stay has the walking times between neighbourhoods, and on this one night they are the only times that matter.

Second, book dinner near the same place. A restaurant across the city is fine at 19:00 and a problem at 23:30. Third, the ferries are the exception worth remembering: they keep crossing to Noord and NDSM on an adjusted timetable, which is the only public way over the IJ that night and the reason a Noord plan is not automatically a bad one.

The fireworks are electric, and that is not a translation error

Visitors arrive expecting gunpowder over the canals. What the city puts on is an electric fireworks display: light, not explosives. The main one is on Museumplein, free, designed for up to 60,000 spectators, and it is the same square as the ice rink and the Christmas Village, which by 31 December has closed.

The countdown clock on Museumplein is billed as the largest in the Netherlands, the junior programme at 19:00 exists so that children can see something without staying up to midnight, and the Sloterplas show in Nieuw-West is ten minutes long and starts exactly at midnight. All of it is free.

What the party pages leave out

Nine results come up for this search and eight of them are selling an evening: parties from 25 to over 1,000 euros, rooftop dinners, cruises, hotel packages. The seventh is a news report, with 113,700 views, on an Amsterdam New Year in which two people died, hundreds were arrested and the Vondelkerk was gutted by fire.

Both pictures are true at once and the useful version sits between them. The organised shows are organised events with stewards. The street around them is a Dutch New Year, which means illegal consumer fireworks going off at ground level among crowds, a national problem that the country argues about every January. We are not telling you to stay in. We are telling you that “Europe's ultimate New Year's Eve destination”, which is the tourist board's phrase, is not the whole description.

Why there is no New Year's Eve cruise to recommend

Being on a boat at midnight on the canals is the obvious thing to want, so we went looking for it. Searching the platforms for 31 December returns the ordinary canal cruises with that date selected, the usual 16,49 EUR classic and the 25,00 EUR ninety minute one, not a product built for the night. The genuine New Year sailings, with dinner and a bar through midnight, are sold by the boat companies on their own sites.

Pointing you at a normal cruise and calling it a New Year's Eve cruise would be selling you one thing as another, so we are not doing it. What does work in December, and what we would actually do: take a Light Festival sailing on another night of the month. It runs for 53 nights, the installations are designed to be seen from the water, and the best rated boat is 28,00 euros. Do it on the 30th, or early on the 31st before the city stops.

Searched on Viator for 31 December 2026 on 1 October 2026. Every result was a standard canal cruise with that date selected, from 16,49 to 25,00 euros, not a New Year's Eve product.

1 January, and the swim

The Dutch start the year by running into the sea. The New Year Swim happens all along the coast and the biggest one near Amsterdam is at Zandvoort aan Zee, about 30 minutes west by train, where thousands go in at once and everyone else stands on the sand with pea soup. Trains are running normally again from 07:00, so getting there is not the problem it would have been nine hours earlier.

Everything above describes the most recent edition the city has published. The pattern repeats but the exact hours do not have to: GVB and NS publish their New Year timetables in December, and those are the ones to use.
